2013
Saturday - Still kind of dragging. It's
possible that this is just a Santa Ana issue, I seem to be more prone
to this as of late, with the dry and cold weather in Lancaster putting
pressure on my sinuses.
Lunch with friends, down at Famous Dave's. Tasty, as always.
In the evening I went over to their house and we watched Back to the Future (1985) and Back to the Future Part II
(1989). They'd picked them up for a quarter each at a yard sale that
day, on VHS, and decided it was an 80's movie night. The movies were
good - I believe this is the first time I've seen them in their
entirety since they came out, and they stand the test of time - well
acted, cleverly plotted, well filmed.
And it's good to know that, by 2015, we'll have hoverboards and flying cars!
Book #7 was Hide Me Among the Graves, by Tim Powers. Good, as are almost all of his books. It is sort of a successor to the excellent The Stress of Her Regard.
Yesterday was my parent's wedding anniversary. Here is another pic of
the wedding day, with (LTR) Dad, Mom, and Dad's best man (whose name I
forget, we always called him "Uncle Drunky"):
Friday
- OTR. Back to Lancaster late. The 14 was moderately heavy but with very
slow traffic at 8pm, made worse by people doing 50-55mph in the fast
lanes. I finally realized that it was a holiday weekend, and grandma
and grandpa were out driving...

Thursday
- OTR, down to Ventura. Met with the client, got some input on the few remaining bits of the task.
Getting some work done, but not feeling well.

2013
Wednesday
- doing a bit of work, cleaning up about the house, getting ready to
hit the road tomorrow. I got the oil changed in the Explorer, but
didn't have time to get it over to CostCo for a tire rotation. Next
week.
I did a bit of work, maybe an hour, of administrative work for
the demolition project, but really ran out of time before getting a good
list. Hopefully I'm not coming down with anything, but I hit the sack
about 9pm, exhausted.
Tuesday
- One of the GIS tasks was to weed out some bad video. I had a rough
idea of where (one of two channels), but after looking at about 40
video's in the channels mentioned by the client I don't see
anything wrong. I'll have to talk to the client about exactly what and where
the problem was. Quite possibly it's on the transfer of the shape files
from Manifold to the version of ESRI software they are using.
I'm using the MyBook Duo external drive hooked directly to the Mac by
the gigabit ethernet. It's still amazingly slow, but part of the
problem is that the Mac is apparently trying to generate thumbnails for each of the tens of thousands of photos and video's in the imagery folder.
This is, in part, our fault for putting everything in one folder,
but the Access database links worked better that way back in the day,
and if "list" under OSX was just a simple list, as it should be,
then the directory listing would be nice and snappy. But Apple, in
their infinite wisdom, decided that each file would have a thumbnail, regardless of whether you choose "list" , "icon" or "thumbnail". So it's no faster than the thumbnail view.
So, the result, speed wise, is that my Intel quad-core-i7 at 2.9GHz, with 8GB of ram, acts like it's a a 4.77Mhz dual floppy IBM XT with 128MB of ram.
Thanks a bunch guys.
Monday
- Still working away, but I have to save some hours for other parts of
the task, so mostly winding stuff up. I did resurrect and run my GIS
interpolation script that I wrote back in 2010 or so. It worked fine,
but some of the mapping points it was using for interpolation were very
far off. I've corrected those, and when I re-run the script it
reinterpolated the defect and feature points, which I then, one-by-one,
re-inserted into the database. For some reason Manifold won't allow you
to cut and paste a block of coordinates in.
Good thing I still had all this on my old Sony.
I really do need to get Parallels and Win7 installed on the Mac, and
move all the stuff on the Sony over, but I've been too busy to deal
with it.
Sunday
- Warm and nice.
I did a bit of work, a bit of reading, a few chores.
