Saturday 14 February 2009
Saturday
- on the road, up to Martinez for the weekend. Rain is expected, through the weekend, so Monday won't be a loss anyway.
Friday 13 February
2009
Friday
- I worked a lot later in Ventura than originally planned -spreadsheet
work, not inspection - and left for Lancaster late, arriving late.
Here is Phoebe, fat and happy in the leaves under the Mulberry trees.
Thursday 12 February
2009
Thursday
- still working. It's been long sleeved shirts and sweater weather,
with cool days for the most part. They've been predicting rain three
days away, since last Saturday, and it still hasn't arrived. Well, California
needs it I suppose, but it's physics and not magic - hoping won't make it so.
In other news, one of my fish died. It was the smaller, sick one. It
had always had some sort of fungus, slowly rotting away its mouth, and
my house sitter found him (her?) 'floating'. She was upset, and blamed
herself for some reason, but we did try all sorts of medicines to cure
it.
She also took the cats to the vet for their checkup. Phoebe is
overweight and needs special (expensive) food and more exercise- no
surprise there. Riley has a couple of cavities that may need work. I
thought I'd seen a couple of dark spots on his teeth the other day,
it's one reason I wanted the checkup. Do they do fillings on cats? I
guess I'll find out.
Wednesday 11 February 2009
Wednesday
- working, then spent the evening going over some design issues for
underground repairs. I think I've got a handle on it now, and can start the spreadsheet for calculations, so that's
good.
Book #6 was
finished, 50
Acres and a Poodle*,
by Jean Marie Laskas. A city girl buys a
farm - hilarity ensues. A fun listen, with nice little portraits of the
eccentric (to her) locals she meets; Billy the constable, Joe
Crowley #1, #2, #3, and #4, and of course Marley the poodle ("...not
one of those little yap-yap dogs..."), scourge of groundhogs, and
others.
There are a couple of sequels, but
not, alas, on tape. I plan to read them sometime though....
Tuesday 10 February 2009
Tuesday
- back at work.
I've found CD's and DVD's in channels before, but an entire MP3 player is a new one:
Remains of a 4GB Ipod.
Monday 9 February 2009
Monday
- Cold still, and since they are predicting rain and snow flurries in
the mountains near the AV I headed down to Ventura in the evening.
One thing I have been trying to do is get a new pair of glasses. I
tried Costco, but they couldn't fill the prescription (too thick, I
suppose). They suggested Sam's Club, as the next best alternative, but
that's (another) $40 membership - and who knows, they may not be able
to fill the prescription either.
After the fiasco with J.C. Penny's I won't be going back there, and I
have heard bad things about the Lenscrafter's in the valley - and they
are expensive.
Perhaps some place online.
Sunday 8 February 2009
Sunday
- cold out. Not a lot to say, mostly I just did chores, amid which I
managed to pull that muscle in my back. Urrgh. I had plans to triage the junk that I got out of the junk room upstairs office, but it'll have to wait until the back feels better - I have to be able to work next week.
Update: Heh. I was waiting for Dave to call, so that we might go do an inspection of a channel together. He was waiting for me to call... It was cold and wet in Lancaster, but dryer in Ventura apparently. Well, we'll just have to do it next week.
