Saturday 19 December  2020

Saturday - A beautiful day!

Working away on this and that.

I asked the neighbor boys for some help, and they came by and lifted the window a/c out of the front room and put it in the garage for me.  Yay!

I then spent a couple of hours cleaning the window sills and stuff.  Also started cleaning the front room couch, that I slept on a lot this year.

Friday 18 December  2020

Friday - Mostly nice, no winds.

I went into town and picked up some pellets. For some reason they had no starter gel.  I wanted more Xmas lights - they had none.

When I got home and unloaded the pellets one of the bags split open a bit - and the pellets that spilled out were mush.  It had apparently gotten very wet.  I'll have to take it back, probably on Sunday when I shop at WinCo next door - I should check all the bags I bought (5X).  I have enough old and dry pellets from last year to get me through the next couple of days.

I went by Van Damn's hardware here and picked up some starter gel, and asked if they carry pellets.  They do, Lignetic's, though they want an extra dollar a bag.  Good to know, in an emergency.

I also picked up a bottle of rum and a bottle of whiskey at the little local market.

Worked on the Swift tutorials in the afternoon.

The USB drives arrived, so I started the backup.  They are only USB-2, so it'll take a while, which is fine for a yearly backup.

In the evening I went next store and had pizza with S and the neighbor's.  She likes to make 'Pagan Pizza' as a gift this time of year, and it was delicious!

This was in the early evening, so I didn't get a chance to look at the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in the first truly clear evening of the last week.

Thursday 17 December 2020

Thursday - Another typical day.

I did some light cleaning - laundry and the big couch.  After sleeping on it so much this year it needs more than just a quick swipe though - I'll have to see if the fabric can go through the wash for the cushions.

The little heater arrived last night.  It seems to work well, according to my kill-a-watt meter the Low setting is 565W, Medium is 865W, and high...I forgot to check.  But the intent is to use it on low, where it is just a bit more than the swamp cooler pulls in summer, so used sparingly it the SCE bill shouldn't be a big issue.

I have some lights to put up around the front room window, but I need to get some help to get the mechanical a/c out of the window first.  I haven't been able to touch things up on the paint there either. Maybe some short strings of white lights for the posts?

Back to the Swift tutorials.

Wednesday 16 December 2020

Wednesday - Typical winter weather, high clouds

I decided to clean the kitchen floor, specifically the baseboards under the cabinets.  These have black plastic overlays, that the previous owner glued in.  But he was sloppy with the glue, and it got on the floor near the boards, and stuck, and attracted dirt which stuck to it.  Basically it always looks like I've never mopped the floor for years, ugh. It's a horrible beat up floor but this was over the top.

Anyway, bought some Goof-Off Commercial, and some Awesome, and some soap and water, and a scraper and Brillo pads and spent about six hours on my hands and knees removing it all. About 2' per hour... I took plenty of Ibuprofen, but pretty much has to sit still and not move much afterwards, my back was that sore.

So, no Swift tutorial stuff.

Tuesday 15 December  2020

Tuesday - Typical early winter weather. The winds have let up in the mornings, which is nice.

I went out and started putting up the Xmas lights.  I have enough to just go across the front of the house on the eaves, about 3' short on the garage end, which is fine.  I also put up a string around the master bedroom window.

About the time I was finishing that AH called and asked if I wanted to go to CostCo and get propane.  I still had some, but it's best to be prepared and we loaded up the truck and headed over.  Despite quite a crowd at the filling station it went quickly enough.  I brought three small tanks as well, but one was leaking so bad it couldn't be filled.

In the afternoon I worked on the Swift tutorials.

Monday 14 December 2020

Monday - It's OK, weather wise.  A normal winter day.

The pellet stove is hanging in there, as long as I don't fill the hopper.  Sometimes it goes out in the middle of the night though.  The new auger motor is on order...next week it should arrive.

Worked on the Swift tutorials in the afternoon.

I ordered a oil little immersion heater for the master bedroom.  It's only $60 and has no fan, and has a thermostat, so I can set it to 58F or whatever.

The kit for fixing ingrown toenails arrived.  It looks like something from the Spanish Inquisition...

I also ordered a couple of USB flash drives for backup.  It's easier and cheaper than driving into town.

Book #59 was All These Worlds (Bobiverse #3), by Dennis Taylor.

There is a fourth book, but it's only available on audio right now.

Sunday  13 December  2020

Sunday - Pleasant.

Did the usual shopping WinCo in the morning, with S.  We even went by WalMart briefly, as we both needed a couple of items from there. I tried to buy some rum, but the cabinets are all locked up for that. Same as WinCo - well, I guess they have pretty much the same clientele these days, primarily thieves from the store's lockdown.

I just need to go by the little market and pick up some up.  Pretty much out of whiskey too, and the traffic makes going to Trader Joe's in Palmdale extremely unpleasant.

Book #58 was For We Are Many (Bobiverse #2), by Dennis Taylor. A fun and quick read.

The new DA for Los Angeles County has effectively announced war on the small business owners and the middle class by legalizing crime.  Sheesh. Basically it means I probably need to fence this property sooner, rather than later. Another expense.
