Saturday
- I stayed in town Friday night, and spent the morning working in the
office. We scoped out a flowchart for some engineering stuff, and I'll
create some Excel templates in the next couple of days.
Then I went down to the
marina, paid the slip fee, and let them copy my documentation
papers. I'm not sure why they want those, but every year they bug me
for it. It's annoying but there isn't really any other place to berth
the boat - Allmar has a near monopoly in Channel Islands harbor; of six
marina's they own five, and the slip fee's reflect that. Oh well. I had
thought of an afternoon sail, but it was well after three when I
arrived at the harbor, and it had gotten overcast and gusty, after a
beautiful morning.
Instead I collected dirty laundry from the
house and headed back up to Lancaster. While on the way some friends
called, with a computer problem. They were waiting in town when I
pulled into my driveway, so we worked the problem, then went out to
dinner, Thai.
This
being wireless networking problem there had
to be some blood to go with the pound of flesh. My router failed, so we
had to log onto a neighbor's insecure network to test things. I
upgraded their ancient Win2k laptop to SP4, and we discussed adding AVG
and Zonealarm, but with only 256MB of ram you really don't want to load
down the system.
Friday
- a reasonably productive day, after a slow start.
I saw a coyote today, in the Santa Clara river bottom, on the far side:
A coyote, across the river...
Zoomed in.

Thursday
- back at work, as predicted, until dark.
I actually did download Poseidon Linux, but version 3.0, which only
took six hours or so, rather than three days. No chance to play with it
for a while, I think.
I found out that the space shuttle landed at Edwards, due to bad
weather in Florida. These are billion dollar vehicles, which can't be
reproduced now. I used to say that they should never land anywhere but
Edwards, but since they are to be retired in a couple of years I
suppose it doesn't matter.

Wednesday
- put in six hours, then had to head to Lancaster. Back to work
tomorrow. The cats were delighted to see me.
No luck with downloading Poseidon Linux...
Tuesday 2 December 2008
Tuesday
- A nice long day in
alongside the trenches. The kid is sharp - he did great work on the
extra GPS unit, thousands of feet, plus what I did myself.
Monday 1 December 2008
Monday
- back at work. A friends' son is helping me, and he's a quick study,
so I think that we'll be using him on the x mappers tomorrow. He has
to get back home soon though.
Cold and foggy.

Sunday
- Hung around long enough for the stupid 49ers' to actually win a game,
which cost me a quarter. Then, on the road (plenty of time for it) I
listened to the Raiders' lose to a 0&10
team. Which made me a quarter. Heh.
Traffic was horrible. At the I-5 & CA-140 junction I moved
three
miles in an hour. So I eventually headed over the the 99 freeway, which
was better, but still terrible. Fog.
It took me nine or ten
hours to drive home. I was listening to the various trials and
tribulations of the Raiders, then of various characters in Bova's
Moonrise, so it wasn't too bad.
