WEEK 47 2020
Last Week- Sun- Mon- Tue- Wed- Thur- Fri- Sat- Next Week
Saturday - It was cold, 44F, overnight on the boat, though not particularly foggy.
I'd tossed the old little electric heater last trip, as it had failed, and the little dehumidifier didn't really do much. Fortunately I had a nice warm sleeping bag, that I had dried on Friday by draping it (and the main blanket I use) of the boom of the main, so no big deal.
The showers only opened at 8:30 and there was a line: one one of the two stalls was functional, so I had to skip that to see the rocket launch scheduled.
I went over to the Ed Hunt park to watch a SpaceX Falcon launch. It's next to a Subway, so I figured I'd get breakfast - but the Subway is gone, so I ended up with a Snickers bar and Coke from the liquor store next door.
It was a good launch from Vandenberg - a bright spark in the distance coming out of the fog over the Pt. Conception headlands, then soaring high to the west through some very light clouds (probably contrail created stuff), staging while almost at the zenith west of the park. I lost sight of the 2nd stage and 1st stage after that, but then could see the final descent burn into the fog as the 1st stage returned to Vandenberg.
Had I realized the showers were going to be a no-go I would have left earlier and watched from further up the coast - instead of 90 miles at Oxnard I could have been in Santa Barbara for example, half the distance, eight times the brilliance...
Friday -Nice weather down at the marina.
Every slip in the marina seemed filled - I discovered later in the day that about 100 yards of slips had been removed to the northwest, so I guess they moved all those boats into my area. It was, despite the crowd and being a Friday, reasonably quiet.
Mostly I just scrubbed and cleaned. The boat felt a bit damp, that may be due to some heavy rains that Dave said came through a few weeks ago.
In the afternoon I met up with Dave and we went over to his body & fender guy, then had some pizza out in the marina parking lot for a very late lunch or very early dinner.
Annoyingly the bathrooms and showers are now only open during office hours, 8:30-5, because of "security issues". I think I mentioned that I'd seen signs of the homeless living in them, last time, I guess it's gotten too bad to leave them open to marina residents keys at night.
So, no shower in the evening.
Thursday - Pleasant enough weather.
Basically just cleaning and prepping for the trip.
Left to pick up S about 5:30pm, picked her up, dropped her off, and was back to the boat by 9:30pm.
It was fine and dry, but there was a very dead mouse in the main cabin. So very dead that he was dried out and not too stinky - and all the bugs that had gathered around were also dead and dry. That said it was about an hour of cleaning before I felt like going to bed.
It was very damp and foggy, to the point where you could see the droplets of fog passing by in the beam of your flashlight.
Wednesday - Pleasant weather again, but a bit too windy for working in the dirt.
Which is fine, my back is still a bit iffy.
Not much else going on, did some computer stuff, did a water change for the turtle tank.
I will probably go down to the boat on Thursday evening, it's been a long time since I was there, and since S was going to see her dad in Ojai I can just drop her off.
Tuesday - Getting warm again.
Just worked on a Jupyter tutorial, and then the state engine for the app. In researching something I discovered that Kochan wrote a 6th edition of his book, which came out in 2015. Mine is from 2012. There were some changes, so I went ahead and ordered it for $10 used (why not?).
Weirdly I thought I saw a Swift book by him, but when I googled and amazoned it there were no results. Strange, I could swear I saw it.
Not much else to say, just hanging in there.
Monday - Warm, but OK.
I went out and worked on the walkway again. Apparently I did not compact, so I had a lot of work to do. I redid last weeks, then did another 50SF, by which time I was beat. I need to decide whether to put a 4" step in, or slope the path down to the level of the rear patio. A step would be easier I suppose, but it'd be awful close to the gate and a tripping hazard if one isn't paying attention. Sloping means some sort of joint and angles in two different directions.
I used up almost all my paver sand. I need to go get more. If I had a 1-ton truck I could just get a skip, and save over buying these little individual bags.
I talked with Dave a bit about a possible Thanksgiving trip out to a BLM campsite.
He went to his body and fender guy about some parking lot damage done to his truck, and showed him some pictures I'd sent him of my truck door dents. The rough estimate is coming back as $2700, which seems ridiculous to me, but, he says, typical. I haven't had to get any body work done in a couple of decades, so I'm out of touch I guess. My deductible is $1k, so there's that...
I talked with S as well. She's finally had time to sit down and think about the post-COVID changes for the app, and we discussed them for a bit. Nothing too extraordinary. The tutorial page is changing, which is too bad, I liked it, but I understand her reasons.
She'll send me a write up shortly.
I understand that Big Sur will not run on my old 2012 MacBook. Glad I bought the Mac Mini.
Sunday - Pleasant. The wind disappeared in the last afternoon on Saturday, so it's back into the low 70s.
Shopping in the morning, with S. Since I skipped last week I needed a lot. I also bought a lot of cat food - and it all pushed me over $100 at WinCo and I got a free turkey out of it. I gave it to S.
It is supposed to be in the low 30s tonight, so I'll be bringing in the hummingbird feeder.
Generally just relaxing otherwise. Did a few laundry and cleaning chores.
