WEEK 38 2020
Last Week- Sun- Mon- Tue- Wed- Thur- Fri- Sat- Next Week
Saturday - Warm.
It was actually rather clear though, with the plume of the Bobcat fire blown well to the east, a well defined wall of smoke, far off.
I worked on the little wall, "finished" the last little bit, though I'm not entirely happy with it. I'm not picky, and had to work around the house footing, but I may need to re-level it. We'll see.
I've been researching getting a full sized spare, instead of the giant emergency "donut" that is one there. But RAM, bless their hears, designed a spare tire holder that won't fit through the central hole in the standard 20" rim! So I can either keep the donut, buy a non-matching steel 20" rim with a hole that the tire retainer will pass through, or modify the tire holder somehow. Or, I suppose, carry the spare in the back, which is stupid.
Why can't I put a regular tire on the steel emergency rim that I have, you ask? Because it's a "temporary duty rim", lightweight, and only 17" in diameter!
Why Dodge, why?
"Against stupidity the gods themselves strive in vain".
Friday - Hot.
A fellow worker, from many years ago, B, lives on the east side of town and took some cell phone shots of the Bobcat fire in the foothills to the south of here. My brother works with her, and forwarded a couple to me. Looks a lot like the "Lake" fire we had on the west side a couple weeks ago. I guess there are evacuations under way in the rural areas there.
I went out about 9:30pm and couldn't see anything but a slight glow to the south east. My neighbors went out at some point and saw it easily. Weird.
I went out for a couple of hours in the evening, with the binoculars, and did some star gazing. A bit too windy for the telescopes though.
I might have to build an "observatory". Probably a shed with a roll-off roof. In the east and the mid-west everyone uses them, because it's too cold in the winter.
Thursday - Hot.
The "Bobcat" fire is still burning. I had thought it was out, but it almost burned the Mt. Wilson observatory to the ground! It actually did burn some of the historic building, but no telescopes, that I know of.
Speaking of scopes, little bits of gear are trickling in here. But there is nothing to see, it's like living under a very smelly marine layer. Once in a while, at night, you can see Jupiter as a red featureless dot.
Not doing much around the house, a few chores, while the back recovers. Better already, but I'm not going to rush things.
Wednesday - Hot.
Went into town and got the tired replaced. They said there was sidewall damage - I drove it a hundred yards or so before I realized there was an issue, and could see a line on the sidewall, so it was a new tire.
They weren't busy, so I was actually done by 9am, didn't need a ride anywhere. Did some quick shopping and a stop by R&S's place as long as I was in town.
As usual, craziness. Someone passed me on the right, in the bike lane. I was going the speed limit. Then they did it again, to the guy a few hundred feet ahead of me. Every time I come into town I now see this sort of dangerous craziness.
Tuesday -
Monday - Hot.
I didn't feel much like driving into town, and the tire place is usually jammed on Monday's, so I'll go tomorrow or Wednesday, if I can get a ride.
Sunday - Very Hot.
I discovered I had another flat on the RAM in the morning. Glad I wasn't on the road this weekend. I used the truck's jack and spare, so I can go into town sometime this week and get it fixed.
S texted, says it was extremely smokey on the drive down to Ojai. I guess it's bad everywhere.
Spent some time looking at real estate in Idaho...
