2012
Saturday - Not too much going on.
After a late breakfast I went over to a friends place and we continued
working on fabricating some rail posts for the pirate ship. As I
mentioned Monday, I'd made up some last year, but completely forgot
about the upper rear rails, which fell off the boat when we pulled off
the old torn tarp for replacement. Fortunately I still has some of the
steel bar stock and flat stock - some already cut to size - so we
finished up cutting, drilling, welding and priming the parts. Then we
painted with Rust-Olem, and since that takes a while to dry, the
project stopped there for the day. A's nephew is coming by on Monday,
and they'll probably drill and through bolt the fittings and rails then.
We did use a bit of red paint to outline steps in the flat black bottom
of the boat, as an aid in preventing tripping. It gets pretty busy and
crowded with kids sometimes!
In the evening it was a trip over to someone else's house for video
(Season #5 of the Big Bang Theory) and popcorn, and browsed through
another book on "Best iPad Apps". I should download some of these, just
to try them out.
Friday
- Back in town in the late afternoon, and still tired. I don't handle late nights well anymore :-(
I was hoping the Shuttle Carrier and Shuttle would fly over Ventura for
their last flight to the museum in Los Angeles, but they didn't. My
thought was that they'd fly down over JPL, then out the Santa Clara
Valley and Oxnard, before turning left at the ocean and flying over
Malibu. But I didn't see them so I guess they took a different route.
Friends have pictures, and of course I've seen the combo any number of
times when I was working at NASA.

Thursday
- OTR. This included a round trip from Ventura all the way to south to
Murrieta. The job went fine - it was just some GPS logging of points
and a bit of review of the job with the boss, but it went long, and it
turned into a 4am to 2am day. Pretty tiring stuff.
They pretty much pull up the freeways at night these days - a friend
(T) had told me they went nuts with construction, but until I
experienced it myself I didn't really comprehend the magnitude of the
thing. It took me two hours to drive down, but almost four to get back.
Wednesday 19 September 2012
Wednesday - OTR.
Tuesday 18 September 2012
Tuesday
- Worked almost non-stop until 2:00pm, when just as I was preparing to
head south the person I was going to meet with called, and we decided
to reschedule for tomorrow, as neither of us had had a chance to review
the drawings.
In the evening we went to Famous Dave's for some BBQ, using up some
coupons that were just about to expire.
K was happy, but tired. He'd been swatting the books in preparation for
a big test in chemistry, and feels he did real well.

Monday
- Again, just working around the house. Mostly in the garage - I can
now fit my car in, but I need to do a lot more work. I'm also going
through my tool bench and toolboxes and getting everything copacetic
there. It's all a mess. I can't find my 3/8" drive socket set, still. I
may have left it in Fremont or Martinez. I did find some other stuff
that I thought I'd lost, so that's nice. I took pictures of all the
unwanted receiver's and tow hitch's, nice DrawTite units, and my friend
will probably put them on Ebay.
I found an entire set of solar yard lights. I think I got them to take
to my Dad's, but they just got buried. I can find a place for them here!
I was also over looking at the Pirate Ship. I was bringing over a new
tarp, and seeing if the tool racks someone gave me would fit on my
trailer (they didn't). While we were taking off the old tarp we noticed
that the railings on the ship stern had fallen off. I had completely
forgotten about those. Last year I had cut steel dowels and plates for
the side and bow railings, and they were installed by someone else
(with screws, rather than the through-bolts I recommended :-( )but I
hadn't even noticed these. So Aron and I are going to weld up a few
more steel brackets for these, since the ship may be used as a game
show prop in a few weeks. I still had some bar stock left for both
dowels and flange's, and we made a start in cutting them to size, but
it'll have to wait until the end of the week or weekend to finish,
since we're both busy mid week.
Sunday
- Not much going on. Working around the house and yard mostly. I'd like
to continue cleaning the garage, and I am, but I need a dumpster for
all the stuff that I want to toss.
I did put Xcode on the new MacBook Pro, it took a while since it was a
1.5GB download from the App store, and it paused every time the laptop
went to sleep. When I realized that I set the sleep timer to an hour,
and that fixed that problem, but it's annoying that the OS isn't smart
enough, in this day and age, to keep downloading in a low power mode in
the background.
Like I said, I've told my partner that I'd
have the first app running by the end of the month, so I'm trying to
move ahead.
In the evening we had a 'fried foods' party at a friends. I attended,
and ate too much, though my help was essentially limited to cutting up
vegetables. It was mostly Indian food, but we did have deep fried
Oreo's for desert!
