Saturday - on the road.

Friday 23 September 2005

Friday - on the road. Quick Cat Blogging:

Zeno the kitten, different colored eyes
I recall reading, years ago Waltari's The Egyptian,  in which the
characters believed that differently colored eyes are the sign of a witch.
I imagine they wouldn't be comfortable with this shot of Zeno.

Thursday 22 September  2005

Thursday - when Phoebe gets bored he wanders about the house, meowing, and scratching at the walls. Blank walls. Either the cat is crazy or there are Borrowers living in my walls.

If there are Borrowers, they'd better hope Phoebe doesn't catch them. I've seen what he does to crickets and moths, and it isn't pretty.

I'm taking the Explorer down to San Diego to get the sun roof fixed - it is stuck open, which severely limits the use I can put it to, particularly in this changeable weather. But I get to visit with my friend Tim over the weekend, see his new little girl, and generally relax and enjoy life.

Wednesday 21 September 2005

Wednesday - so, a updated table about books I've read this year.

As the evil Willow might say: "Bored now".

And I'm not even caught up, week for week. Chichester would be shaking out a reef, in 40 knot winds, in this situation.

I picked up Never Call Retreat at the library today, which reminded me: I read #34 Grant Comes East, by Gingrich and Fortstchen earlier this year. It was OK, though actually it was the second book in the  alternate history series, one in which for the first book Lee wins at Gettysburg. I haven't yet read the first book, Gettysburg.

At least the cursed web page is back up to date.

Tuesday 20 September 2005

Tuesday - okay, went to my web hosting place and checked on things. There is a message there, circa September 4th:

tux pix

It's been a long time coming. We will be upgrading all of our Plesk for Linux systems over the next weeks, starting late this week. GTO was done last week, and we are fixing the annoyances that are cropping up during the Labor Day holiday.

The upgrade, once we got the right software from SW-Soft, went remarkably smoothly. Most sites were working "out of the box". A few sites, particularly legacy sites, needed slight tweaks to be made to the server to get them back on the air. (If you are on GTO, and are experiencing ANY problems, write support@amhosting.com.)

We will be publishing a tentative schedule of servers later in the week.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a wise saying. We have found, though, that our servers are showing signs of running a three-year-old operating system, old control panel software, and outdated support software. By doing this upgrade, we fix a lot of security issues, and ease our maintenance headaches with an automated software update package. We will take this opportunity to add the features many of you have been asking for.

I dunno. What's a 'plesk' anyway? Sounds a bit like an endangered siberian antelope species. Anyhow, maybe it is all explained now. I'm too lazy to check on it. I know the changes happened later than September 4th for me. Oh well.

I like the little penguin gif.

Monday 19 September 2005

Monday - on the road, back to Lancaster, via AmTrak. [Something has changed in my server, so this will be posted when I get back to Lancaster.]

Book #33 is "Maiden Voyage" by Tania Aebi, who sails her Contessa 26 (good choice) alone around the world in 1985. Read it on the bus. I don't know if I can stand reviewing another sailing book just now.

I'll try:

Quick review: Dad buys her a boat, challenges her to sail around the world because she's a slacker. She does, but spends a lot of time, slacking, along the way.

Sunday 18 September 2005

Sunday - on the road, up in Martinez. [Something has changed in my server, so this will be posted when I get back to Lancaster.]

Book #32 is "The Romantic Challenge", by Francis Chichester. Yes, yes, I know, I'm in a rut. I got all these sailing books at about the same time and I'm getting rather tired of the theme myself.

Quick review: C gets a new boat, Gypsy Moth V (he's in a bit of a boat name rut), sails east and west across the Atlantic, and then north and south along the Atlantic. Drives his boat hard, breaks some gear, returns safely. The end.

Picture of the Week
butterfly, photographed at the top of Mt. Baden Powell

Photo Notes: This is the a butterfly that I saw at the top of Mt. Baden Powell, a few weeks back. No apparent problems in flying at 9300 feet. It must fly at a relatively low Reynold's number, even a sea level.
