Weather
Sunday 15 September 2002
Sunday - a lazy day. The 49er's were
playing, so I spent some time watching them. They lost, unfortunately.
Monday 16 September 2002
Monday - a busy day at work. Once again
mostly eaten up by meetings of one sort or another, and phone calls. Oddly,
when I finally was home in the evening the phone just rang off the hook.
Tomorrow is my hand surgery, and I was trying to get a few things done, but
oh well....
A friend kindly loaned me a dog house for the dog. It was cool and windy
last night and I was concerned. I sort of used the bread crumb trail method
to get it used to going into the little crate, but it's a very timid dog,
and not too excited about the idea. We'll see if a cool and blustery night
does the trick.
Tuesday 17 September 2002
Tuesday - yup. The dog was curled up inside
the crate when I peeked out this morning. Sadly the Petsmart dog rescue
people won't have much to to with her - the liability issues on American
Staffordshire Terriers' are too great. I did get a couple of other
dog rescue phone numbers though, and I'll try those.
Wednesday 18 September 2002
Wednesday - well, surgery is done, maybe.
I was efficiently chauffeured to and from the hospital by K, many thanks.
There are various pins and buttons sticking out of the mass of dressings.
It doesn't hurt a lot, so that's good. There isn't a lot to say - I hope
it all works is all.
And I would like to say thanks to all the people that have kindly
so checked in on me - it's very heart warming!
Maybe I'll post a grisly picture later...
Thursday 19 September 2002
Thursday - I took the day off, but at a good
friends' urging I had previously stocked up on foodstuffs, so I am not going
to go hungry. The hand is only moderately painful - work tomorrow I
think.
A friend has graciously loaned me a Mercedes! Holy cow! It's a 1982
300-SD, a turbo diesel. After driving the Probe GT for so many years it feels
like driving a really cool bus!
Friday 20 September 2002
Friday - work. I went in early because the
company has finally noticed all the short days I've been taking, since june.
They are pretty good about it, but there's no sense in my being abusive. This
way I may actually get some work done before the days distractions! See a
few more sunrises.
I did assemble and load the OS - Win2k - on our new 2.8Ghz PC. With some
help. I think my cubicle neighbor was somewhat alarmed by the amount of
cursing it takes to do it right! We really need the extra speed - the
runtime, already taking weeks, apparently needs even more time! The
parallel cluster has only had about ten or fifteen hours of attention paid
to it in the last two weeks. Sigh. That's nowhere near enough profanity
to successfully start a system that complicated.
When I went to the hand therapy place after work I discovered that I wasn't
expected. Because of the things the surgeon had done the therapist wanted
to contact him before starting, and couldn't. They'd left a message for me
at home, thinking I'd take the day off. No way, things to do, people to see!
I'm getting concerned about adhesions and such if I don't get this therapy
started soon.
Saturday 21 September 2002
Saturday - rathr busy. Changed the oil in the Mercedes ( 8
quarts! ), did a little new car shopping. Cleaned up the house a bit as well
- slow work with just one hand. It is the autumnal equinox and I had planned
an early rising to photograph the sunrise, but slept in. Oh well.

Photo Notes: I went down to the marina in
Richmond to check on our boat. It was fine. Walking along the dock I saw this
boat nearby. The mast is busted in half, but all the pieces are there, as
is the boom, so it probably wasn't compressive buckling, but rather a failure
in bending. The only other damage I could see is a bent stanchion on the
starboard side. The pieces are nicely bedded down on life jackets and cushions,
and held with various lines and sheets. A good job of recovery.
