Saturday
- not much to say. The lawn tractor moving and the past few weeks of
physical labor did a number on my back, and last night's six hours of
fair wandering was the last straw. I was essentially house bound for
the entire day. Bah.

Friday
- about a half day at work, then I headed home. On the way I
picked up a little lawn tractor, given to me by a friend. I had
underestimated the size, this was a twelve horsepower behemoth, but we
were able to fit it, but not the little trailer attachment, onto a
trailer.
Arriving
back in Lancaster there was a meet up with friends, and then we were
off to the Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival. This is the
little county fair that we have been going to for years. The new
grounds are not quite so new now, and it feels a bit more homey and
comfortable. There is now a separate building for photography (new this
year), and another for the 4H (new last year). My friend and her boy
both won awards - including best of Division - for their cakes and
candies, so that was nice.

Monday
- I hired a handyman to cut down some of the 'volunteer' trees along
the block walls and house. The roots can cause great damage, and though
I liked the shade they had to go. I left one - it's a bit further from
the walls than the others - but it will need to come out in a year or
two. These appear to have grown from seeds - they are mulberry tree's,
much beloved by the local birds as the mulberry's ripen.
I also fixed the fenders on the trailer, making it possible to take it
one the freeway. Someone I know in Ventura has offered me a riding
mower for free, I may give it to my sister in Fremont, for her orchard
out back.
Then it was down to Ventura, and work.
I should note some old SciFi pulled off the shelf and read in the last few weeks. These were by Poul Anderson, namely #44: Orbit Unlimited, #45: The Enemy Stars, and #46: There Will be Time.
All well written in the late 1950's and early 1960's, all rather short
by modern standards. The first is really a collection of four stores or
novelettes, the last two are actual novels & share part of
Anderson's 'future history', specifically his Maurai Federation..

Sunday
- Well, Mike is mostly moved. Motorcycles, weight benches, aquariums -
everything but the baby
grand piano (I had to draw the line somewhere). Actually
he is waiting on either (1) a Craiglist buyer, or (2) the piano mover
to call back. It was a long, hot, tiring day, but he's happy to be
moved. He had cleaners come in to do the floors in the old place, so
hopefully he'll get some of his deposit back.
Book #43 was
Thomas Perry's latest, Runner,
a Jane Whitefield novel. It was well done, but virtually
indistinguishable from any other of the JW novels. He attempts a bit of
character development for Jane, but it doesn't really come off
convincingly (to me).
