WEEK 33 2020
Last Week- Sun- Mon- Tue- Wed- Thur- Fri- Sat- Next Week
Saturday - Very hot.
I received a text from my brother B. When he got up this morning there was a very nice conjunction of the old moon and Venus, he sent a text picture. Sorry I missed it. But with all the smoke it's like living under the marine layer, not much binocular or telescope observing possible.
He said it is very smoky up there too - lots of wildfires in the Sierra's and the wind is blowing the smoke east.
Fires are still raging here - almost 20,000 acres now. Ugh. Hot AND horrible air quality.
The back is a bit better, but I think I'll pass on stacking wall blocks for a bit longer.
Friday - Hot and very smoky. It is supposed to become very hot, 109F, 110F, 109F, 109F, 107F, but I suspect that much smoke will cool things a bit. One can hope.
The fire is over 10,000 acres now I guess. For the most part it is on the far side of the hills here, but it is within a few miles of the Poppy Preserve.
So, I talked to USPS, and they said that the carrier has sent the package back to the vendor because there is no such address. "It's a new carrier.". I'm pretty sure that there must be some sort of protocol they follow, to check out, before they do this...but "Forget it, it's the Postal Service Jake."
So I emailed the vendor, Agena Astro. And they email back "Well, if it's returned, we'll re-shelf it, and bill you."
Um, no. I didn't pick the USPS, they did. It's the cost of doing business.
I have already written an angry reply, but sent it off to a friend to review first, since I was so mad.
Thursday - Hot and smoky. The fire is getting bigger, and only about 10 miles away.
I found an old suitcase in one of the storage sheds. At first I thought it was my brother Bob's because it had some stuff from Okinawa in it - receipts and such, nothing valuable, then I found this, which puts it well before his time:
Wednesday - Hot.
Doing various things around the house, back is sore.
Despite the heat, it suddenly got dark in the afternoon. Going outside there is a big fire in the hills to the southwest:
Tuesday - Hot!
S had given me some peaches from her trees, but I left them on the seat of the truck and only remembered this morning. They were is a plastic bag, which is fortunate because they had liquefied!
S says she is slogging through setting up the new laptop: as well as the usual stuff it's a "patch Tuesday" from Microsoft with over 100 critical and severe bugs to be fixed! But slightly less than last month.
She is trying to turn off Cortana, but they don't make it easy.
I've been awaiting a new telescope eyepiece, and it still hasn't arrived. Checking the tracking it seems that USPS couldn't find my house! Since I get mail regularly this is a bit weird, I'll have to contact them and see what's up.
The Telrad finder arrived, which is good (same vendor and USPS!). I'll have to put some batteries in and check if it lights up. Then put it on the scope and align it.
Monday - Hot.
While putting stuff away I found my recently purchased Tupperware - in the cupboard next to the tea assortment... Weird.
Cats, including Budd, wouldn't touch the liver&chicken bought yesterday. It must be bad, so I tossed it.
It's so hot that even in the office, with a fan, the MacBook overheated.
I've been keeping an eye out for **quiet** small air conditioners, but there are none to be found, just the cheap "roaring monsters". I have one of those, and it makes that office almost unusable while running :-(
Sunday - Still hot.
Shopping with S. I spent quite a bit because of missing shopping last week.
Since I can't find the Tupperware that I bought a couple of weeks ago S offered me a surplus set she had, but I forgot it...
S bought a new laptop, and it arrived. Apparently it was aimed at the gamer market (good specs!) and has glowing lights and a dragon screensaver. Her clients will be thrilled...
