Saturday
- When I arose this morning and eventually turned on the PC, I couldn't
remember the user name. It took me hours, but I eventually figured it
out. It's the Linux box, so a re-install would be free, if annoying.
Also I have a bunch of pictures and MP3's on it that I would probably
lose. I really need to set up a centralized media server - I've my old
NetDisk but it doesn't understand anything but Windows.
It has occurred to be, belatedly, that I am spending far too much time at the computer.
Friday
- I have been accused of being lazy, neglecting the blog. Well, it's
true. But I was pretty busy.
Even when busy I listen to tapes in the car. About an hour a
day right now, and the commute to/from Lancaster adds another four
every week. So, say 10 hours a week. It adds up. A book on tape about every week and a half.
Thus, Book #2,
The
Surgeon's Mate*,
by Patrick O'Brian. As always, excellent. The situation of the Catalan
soldier's in the Baltic is true to history, and the English revelation
to them of Napoleon's duplicity and their moving to the English side is
true. However the island of Grimsholm is apparently fictional.
While researching that I ran across a link to the Lines of Torres Vedras
at Wikipedia. These show up in Cornwall's Sharpe novels, but I never
looked them up, and the description always seemed weird - they put
forts across all of Spain Portugal? No, just a peninsula it turns out. Still, a big job.
But wait, that's not all!!! Charges of laziness must be met with all the blogging firepower at my disposal. I give you:
The Return of Friday CatPictures:
Riley wasn't initially happy with the coming of Phoebe in 2000, so Phoebe had to stay into a cage
until Riley acclimatized (though Phoebe just wanted out, to play!) Since Riley sat just outside
the cage, growling, it made sense to put his little den on top. And even after a couple of weeks, with
Phoebe loose, he preferred to sleep up there.

Tuesday 6 January 2009
Tuesday
- up and at them again. Still cold and foggy. Did some more tech
editing stuff in the evening.
Monday 5 January 2009
Monday
- working away. It was cold in the morning, 33F, and I was standing in
about four inches of water for most of the day. Yuck.
Worked on some proposal stuff in the evening, until about 10pm.
Sunday 4 January 2009
Sunday
- stayed down in Ventura, hoping to do some work, but it just didn't
happen.
Book #1 was Accelerando,
by Charles Stross. I actually started this book over a year ago, at the
library when I didn't have a card, and just got back to it. It's a
Singularity novel, and post Singularity. When not writing boiler plate
fantasy Stross has a pretty inventive mind.
