Saturday 18 April  2020

Saturday - Nice weather.

I did another 100sf of weeds with the little 18V weed whacker.  I really do need to get a more powerful unit.  The old DR unit would be about $350 to replace new, but sadly they were bought by Generac and manufacture moved overseas. The quality is now (from reviews) horrible, from being among the best.

There are a lot of reviews about lawn equipment, but mostly it's just puff pieces, nothing on longevity.

I'll probably just get a little gas unit and always run white gas in it.

The cut weeds currently look a bit like a lawn, btw, it's enjoyable to sit outside and look at right now.  It kind of makes me want a lawn again - despite swearing that I was done with watering and cutting and weeding and fungicide and...

I also moved the last of the piles of dirt.  Sadly, whenever I get around to landscaping I'll probably end up moving the dirt back.

I read some more of Neuberg's book.  An overwhelming chunk on closures and lambda's and such.  I kind of get it, but it seems to me that it's almost too complicated to use - and probably impossible to debug, particularly if done in the shorthand way.

I don't feel code needs to have to be Objective-C level verbosity, but there must be a middle ground.

Friday 17 April  2020

Friday - Nice weather again. Some winds, but it's warm enough that it isn't such a big deal.

No major yard work - I decided to give it a rest for a day.

I need to get my garden plants outside, but I need to finish an enclosure, so the critters don't devour the vegetables.

Facetimed with a friend yesterday.  He'd called about some job opportunities he'd seen, and thought I might have some insight about. I didn't - pretty much out of the job market these days - but we talked for quite a while.  It's probably been ten years  - he's done very well, moved into middle management and has a wife and kid and a nice house in the new england area. I lost his number when I transitioned to the iPhone I think.

Book #16 was Miners and Empire (Merchant and Empire #5), by Alma T.C. Boykin.  Enjoyable. Fantasy, but with a very mundane feel to it.

Thursday 16 April 2020

Thursday - Nice weather.

I started weed whacking in the back yard with the small hand held Ryobi 18v whacker.  It really isn't up to the job.  After 20m the small battery was deplected and I'd done probably less than 100sf. This could take a while...

I also did a bit more work in the front yard, removing some weeds - and the large piles of soil they'd grown on.  These piles were from clearing away dirt that had accumulated in front of the house, actually reaching 4-6" above nominal grade and touching the composite wood siding.  I'd planned to put a couple of raised beds of flowers or whatever in front, so had left them, and then the rains and snow came. I moved two of the piles, and decided to save the rest for another day.

K mentioned that he was back in port earlier in the week, and a look at the webcam showed the NO back.  I was having trouble sleeping, and checked the webcam just before midnight - and there were two tugs taking her out!  What are the odds? Back to sea I guess.

Wednesday 15 April 2020

Wednesday - Nice weather.

I continued weeding out in the yard.  I made it a point to be out there when the garbage truck came by - he didn't do the three point turn in front of the house since I was there. Both bins were full, for once, mostly with green waste - which goes to the same place as everything else, but I am forced to pay for a 2nd container, just for it. It's looking better, but I'm only good for about 4 hours of bending and stoop labor these days, so it isn't quite done

Did another tutorial, this time from the Hacking With Swiift folk.  It was OK, but not great.  I also started reading Matt Neuberg's iOS 13 book again, from the beginning. I started some months ago, then got busy with other things.  It's very detailed, almost too much so.

Had the Corona-virus money from the government show up in my bank again.  Nice.

I need to do my taxes. Glad there was a respite this year, but it'd help with planning if I knew what last years number were.

Tuesday 14 April  2020

Tuesday - Nice weather.

I started with trying to cut the weeds in the back yard, but the machine died, again.  I like it when it works, but it has never worked for more than an hour without needed repairs. I think I'll have to buy a new one, maybe a gas powered unit.  I suspect they are pricey though.

Instead, I continued to weed in front of the main house - this time to the larger northern side of the driveway. That's 75x45 feed of frontage, and I didn't get it all done, my back gave out before the weeds...

Monday 13 April 2020

Monday - Reasonable weather.

I arose at 5am, showered, and made it to S's place by 6:30am. We did Winco, and a quick trip by Lowe's next door.  I forgot my list(s), but I didn't really need all that much.

The butcher shop at WinCo was closed  - I'm not sure if that's because we were early, or because of the CV thing.  I bought a ham at S's suggestion, and I'll cut it into meal sized portions and freeze most of it.

I was very tired when I got home, and really didn't do anything until late afternoon, when I used the push mower to cut about half the weeds in the "dog run" portion of the yard, i.e. the fenced portion. Then my back gave out.

I'd love to use the mower, but there is far too much debris - rocks, stones, bits of concrete, nails, old cans.  And it's very rough, it has probably not been graded or leveled in 30 years.

Sunday 12 April 2020

Sunday - Reasonably warm.

I tarted doing some cleanup in the back yard.

The growth in weeds over the last week was phenomenal. I'll have to wait a couple of days before cutting them, everything is still too damp.

But I did get the tricycle weed whacker out, and started removing all the debris that had accumulated back in the dog run area - ladders, blocks, bricks, fence post stanchions, tree supports, chairs, and other stuff.  Much of it almost hidden by the knee high weeds.

Not much going on, otherwise. I did a bit of reading, and some house work.  I seem to be doing more house work than ever, it's strange.

The corona-virus stuff is still going on.  S and I will head over to WinCo tomorrow morning.
