Saturday 11 April  2020

Saturday - Still raining.  Sprinkling, really.

I made some Cocoa in the new-to-me Keurig, and it didn't really taste right, the powder not really dissolving and settling to the bottom of the mug.  I checked the label on the bottom of the gifted box of chocolate k-cups it came with and that had a Best-By-Date of 15May2012!  Or maybe is was 12May2015? Heh.

out of date

S&R went by the "Farmers Market" late morning they said. But there was a single vendor, making it a "Farmer" Market really....

Friday 10 April  2020

Friday - Still raining.

The toe is still sore, but not as much as earlier in the week, when even draping a sheet over it at night was painful.

Working away on various computer related things mostly.

S is having cable internet installed at her office. Prior to this she just used her phone as a hotspot, but she is trying to use Zoom and it wasn't working right, lots of freezing and buffering.  She discovered that she doesn't have an RJ-45 port on her newish laptop, so I sent her a link to where she can buy a USB : RJ-45 adapter at Amazon.

I did make a loaf of bread in the bread machine.  It came out quite well this time!

Thursday 9 April 2020

Thursday -Still raining.

S has had my first generation iPad for years, at her office.  Now that she has her own 2nd generation there she asked if she could give the first to a friend, and I said yes, of course.  It took a while to get everything off, but she handed it over, with some instructions on how to use it.  I believe the recipient is mostly going to use it for email and Netflix, so the antiquated OS shouldn't be an issue.

Book #15 was Gods of Pangaea (Pangaea #3), by John C. Wright. Entertaining, if a bit violent in spots.

Budd has been enjoying the garage, but when he comes in he heads immediately to the pellet stove and sits directly in front of it for ten or fifteen minutes.  Very cute.  I set up a lamp for heat out in the garage, over one of the chairs, so he spends a lot of time curled up on it there.

Wednesday 8 April 2020

Wednesday - Still raining.

I somehow aggravated the ingrown toenail on the left foot, so I wouldn't be out walking the neighborhood, even if it wasn't raining. In fact I can't wear shoes right now, so I'm padding about in my loosest set of slippers when I leave the carpeted areas.

The pellet stove is working well,  I enjoy the experience, as I think I've mentioned, and am surprised to need it so late in the year.

I did have an issue where it wasn't burning correctly, flaring up and being very smoky.  I finally turned it off and let it cool down, and then discovered that the burner pot hadn't been correct set into it's little hole.  My fault.  I cleaned everything with the vacuum and on startup everything was fine.

I thought I was done a couple of weeks ago, and had oiled the exhaust fan bearings.  Oh well.

Tuesday 7 April  2020

Tuesday - It's still raining!

Started laundry in the morning, a couple loads of that.

Which reminds me, it's probably getting close to time to refill the propane tank. Bah.

Worked more on Swift.  I had to give up on the current tutorial book, just over half-way through, too many errors and omissions.  It wasn't a great book, but when they updated it for Swift 5 from Swift 4 they did a very very poor job - code doesn't work and (unlike early versions) they didn't even bother putting errata up on GitHub.

Book #14  (since I read over half), is Swift 5 for Absolute Beginners, by Kazmarek, Less & Bennett.  It wasn't all that good a book, and the errors made it unusable.

In related news, Apple has messed around with Xcode again, to it's detriment.  The object library now has to be brought up as a separate pane, and disappears after you select a single item.  WTH Apple?

Monday 6 April 2020

Monday - Rain coming in. I'm actually looking forward to running the pellet stove.

Did chores most of the morning, various things.

I am limping a bit, that ingrown nail started hurting after Sunday's endeavors.  Really I need to get some minor surgery, but that isn't going to happen until all this virus stuff is done.

Started in on a Swift 5 tutorial book, working in the west office.  So far so good.  It's a bit out of date, 5.0 instead of 5.2, but Apple has been updating so quickly that it's inevitable.

Sunday 5 April 2020

Sunday - Reasonably warm.

I went shopping in the morning with S, at WinCo.  It's been twelve days for me.  There was a short line but they waved us up to the front, where they checked my ID for birth date and let us in.

I didn't get a lot of stuff: cat food, kitty litter, veggies, beer.  I was going to get creamer and some steaks, but forgot.

The cats are unhappy with the food as I mentioned last week.  I'm guessing the QC inspectors in China are busy with the N95 mask side of production...

What it means is that a lot they won't eat. I was throwing it out, but then starting putting it outside for the feral cats in the RV shed. They don't seem to mind. And I'm hand feeding Jim again.  Sigh.  But it's the only way to get a reasonable amount of food into Jim, he looked to be losing weight again.

After WinCo we went next door to Lowe's.  S has some serious drainage issues at her office, so we picked up 60' of gutter and gutter furniture, and since we were there: some raised bed soil, and some 2x8's planks and blocks for a raised bed.  I bought some painters tape and romex - they didn't seem to have the gray fiberglass exterior fixture boxes i wanted.o dis

Unlike Home Depot there was no line to get in, although it was early-ish on a Sunday morning, perhaps 9am.

I dropped all this stuff off and headed home, arriving at about 11am, only to discovered I'd forgotten my sandwich meat at S's place, and still had her water bottle.

Not much going on, otherwise. Because of the weather, windy and cool with some slight sprinkles, I once again didn't walk. Still tired from getting up at 5am guess.

The corona-virus pandemic continues.  It's worse in NYC and Louisiana, but a lot of that is their own fault, for eliminating emergency stocks and for encouraging crowds and conventions... Still, it hits everyone, not just the foolish.
